Car insurance claim
|
Was woken up to a Big Bang at 3am this morning. Looked out the window and saw a KA having collided with a parked car right outside my window. 2 girls were getting out the back and two young blokes out the front. All were clearly pissed up and one of them said "quick, run". By the time I'd got outside 3 of them had gone but the driver was caught in a headlock with one of my neighbours who caught him, pleading like a little bitch to be released. He claimed he wasn't the driver but a few different people saw him having got out the drivers seat.
Anyhow, police turn up and arrest him. Find £1000 in cash on him and he obviously fails the breath test. Turns out the car was stolen as well.
We look at the cars down the road and he'd managed to hit about 6 of them, causing varying degrees of damage, one of them being mine. Not massive damage, some lightish scratches on front passenger door and pretty big scuffs and scratches on the paintwork of the bumper, but would cost £300ish to repair I would have thought.
My question is what the deal is with insurance here. I've got a £250 excess and 12 years no claims (albeit protected). My insurance is due for renewal in 10 days, but they ask the question "have you been involved in an accident regardless of fault over the last 5 years". Anyone know how much of an impact this sort of thing would have on my premium? Am I best off sucking up the repair costs and not bothering with insurance? Is recovering my excess even an option if you get hit by a drunk driver in a stolen car? If I'm not going to get my £250 excess back then I guess there's no point in even telling the insurance company?
Any views welcome.

If a police report has been made that includes details of damage to your car you will need to tell your insurance if you claim or not.
Your premium will then go up £150 to £200.
Failure to tell your insurance is likely to lead non payment of future claims.
You're welcome.

Im going to go down the small claims route.
Will get the car fixed myself and keep insurance out of it, put an application in under the freedom of information act to get all the details of the incident and then pay £35 to start the small claims process. Pretty sure nothing will come of it and I'm throwing a little bit of good money after bad, but if nothing else it might shit him up a bit and stress him out, rather than him thinking there were no real consequences to his actions.

Key thing is the assumption of one accident = more. They all rip you off and no claims is a joke. As it goes up, you should get a greater discount but it all gets swallowed somehow. Loved the excuse from Lloyds this year that it was the insurance tax that had trebled my insurance. Just turned out they were profiteering wankers and I got the old price from Aviva. Probably have the same happen with them now for next year.

I take it you don't have legal cover on your insurance or you could get them to go after the driver in a civil case to cover your excess.
Alternative is to have the damage sorted through your insurance plus any other blemishes sorted and go after the muppet in the small claims court!

Few years ago some woman rear ended me at traffic lights. No real damage on my car although she had a bit of a dent on her front bumper. Swapped details for when I had a proper look at my car later just in case but didn't bother with the insurance because I had no damage. She was tearful and apologetic but no damage was done to mine so not a problem. Days later I received a letter from my insurance company saying she was claiming that I had reversed into her. I had her phone number and the Insurance company said I could phone her so I did. She waffled on saying her boyfriend forced her to claim it was my fault. I politely asked her to retract her claim. Few days later they had changed their story now saying I had "rolled" back into her. I went up town and drove around the one way system several times to park in the same spot at lights with no one behind me. Took the hand brake off and my car didn't move because the road was indeed flat!! Took a few photos and lo and behold they retracted their claim. No action taken against them and then my insurance premium went up at renewal. Just changed insurance companies but the whole system stinks.

Andy, it all depends on who you are insured with, and what level of cover you've got. A few companies offer an 'uninsured driver promise' that effectively will cover you for exactly the situation you are in. If you've not got that, I wouldn't bother telling them as your prices will go up extortionately.
If you've bought the legal protection then you can use that to claim damages etc, although probably not worth it for a couple hundred.
